Anne (Annalies) Marie Frank (1929-1945) moved in 1933 from Frankfurt, Germany to Amsterdam, Holland, when her father, Otto, saw what Hitler's Nazi party would mean for Jews, communists, gays and many others. But the Nazis invaded Holland, and in 1942, Anne and her family went into hiding. Fearing the worst, Otto Frank had prepared a hiding place in rooms above his factory. (The factory, located at 263 Prinsengracht, became a museum in 1957.) For over two years Anne recorded her hopes and fears in her diary which she called "Kitty." Anne died in Bergen-Belsen concentration camp of typhus about April 1945, only a few short months before liberation by the Allies. Published by her father after the war, Anne's diary is an incredible testimony to the human spirit.
