Sultana Khaya is a human rights defender of Western Sahara, the last remaining colony in Africa. Spain remains the administrative power in Western Sahara while Morocco imposes a brutal military occupation that is supported by the US government.

The Moroccan forces commit sexual assault against women and men, destroy homes and deprive basic human rights, causing physical and psychological trauma to the Saharawi people.
Sultana Khaya, a committed nonviolent activist, is a prominent leader in her community of indigenous women resisting these atrocities as well as the plunder of her homeland’s natural resources, including phosphates, iron ore, oil and fisheries.
