Born Eunice Kathleen Waymon in Tryon, NC in 1933, Nina Simone (1933-2003) was a singer, songwriter, musician, arranger and civil rights activist whose music spanned many genres. On March 24, 1965, she performed her protest song Mississippi Goddam before 40,000 marchers at the conclusion of the third Selma to Montgomery (AL) march.  It was one of many songs she either wrote and/or performed that addressed civil rights, and black liberation and identity.
