A fearless anti-lynching crusader, suffragist, women's rights advocate and journalist, Ida was born into slavery in 1862. A consistent radical, she began a national campaign against lynching in 1892 which nearly eliminated that horrific practice.
Ida B. Wells (1862-1931) was our nation’s leading anti-lynching activist. Fearless, articulate and passionate, she wrote, spoke and organized to bring public attention to these white suprematcist murderers. She was also active in the struggle for women's suffrage, pushing white women to be inclusive.
