Three sisters agriculture is a traditional model utilized by the Haudenosaunee and other Indigenous Peoples of the western hemisphere. It involves planting corn, pole beans and winter squash in a shared plot where the plants support one another.  The corn stalks provide a sturdy climbing surface for the beans, which add nitrogen to the soil to support the growth of the heavy feeding corn plants. The winter squash spread out among the hills of corn and beans keeping the soil moist and reducing weeds
